Brief Biography
Dr. Abraham D. Lavender, a native of South Carolina, has a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Maryland (1972), and is Professor of Sociology and Sephardic Studies at Florida International University, Miami, Florida. He is immediate past president of the Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies. He is the author of six books, including A Coat of Many Colors: Jewish Sub-communities in the United States, and Jewish Farmers of the Catskills, and over fifty scholarly publications. His specialties include social applications of DNA, with an emphasis on comparisons of Jewish and non-Jewish DNA, and socio-religious analyses of the descendants of the secret Jews of Spain and Portugal. He also is president of the Miami Beach Historical Association, and of the South Florida Association of Phi Beta Kappa.
