Book Reviews

To the author of a book: A number of publishers will send books for possible review. However, not all will, so an author is encouraged to check with the publisher to determine if his/her book has been sent.

An author also can send the book directly to the Book Review Editor at Dr. Abraham D. Lavender, Dept. of Sociology, Florida International University, Miami, FL 33199 USA.

If using FedEx, UPS, etc., the physical address is FIU, 11200 SW 8th Street, Building DM, Room 334, Miami, FL 33199, and the phone number is 305-348-2247.

Receipt of a book does not guarantee a review, and submitted books can not be returned, but the journal will attempt to review several books for each issue.

To the reviewer of a book: Scholars are invited to volunteer to review books for the journal by sending an email to the Book Review Editor (abelavender@aol.com). Please include a brief resume indicating your degrees, your specific areas of interest, and your major publications in the areas of interest. When appropriate concerning area of interest, the Book Review Editor will contact the potential reviewer via email to determine if he/she can review a specific book.

Book reviews should be submitted to the Book Review Editor within 30-45 days from receipt of the book. Book reviews should be from 750 to 1500 words, and should be written in a professional objective manner. Reviews can be descriptive only, or can include an overall evaluation of the book by the reviewer. However, the review should give information on the overall content of the book, the overall theme of the book, the overall theoretical, conceptual, or ideological perspective of the book, the major contributions of the book, and the major weaknesses (if any). These items can be in any order, and of different amounts of discussion, but all should be included. The purpose of the book review is to help the potential reader determine the book's contribution to the field of study, and, more directly, to help the potential reader decide whether or not to read the book.
